Effective December 24, 2024, the Canadian Government announced that flagpoling is no longer a valid method to obtain or extend a work permit.
What is flagpoling?
Flagpoling occurs when foreign nationals who hold temporary resident status in Canada, leave Canada and, after a visit to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon, re-enter to access immigration services at a port of entry. Relevant examples of this can include:
- Obtaining a new work permit
- Extending a current work permit
- Activating an IEC
What if I visit the USA and return to Canada?
This is still be considered flagpoling and you will not be able to obtain a work permit unless you are a US Citizen.
