Camp Canada, in partnership with Shendy’s Training and CPR Centre, offers National Lifeguard and Bronze Cross certification courses tailored specifically for international participants. These intensive “crash courses” are expertly designed to ensure top-tier training without requiring any prerequisites. Delivered by highly skilled and experienced instructors, the courses provide participants with exceptional preparation for their lifeguarding roles.
Can I use my international certification at camp?
No, the Canadian Lifesaving Society does not recognize international certifications and there are no direct Canadian equivalents to the National Lifeguarding certification.
How much will the course cost?
The cost of the course will be covered by your camp. If your course takes place in a host city, or at a different camp:
- You will cover the cost of room and board for the duration of your course (can range from $35 to $45 per night depending on the hostel you choose)
If you do a course in Toronto:
- Camp Canada will assist with subsidizing transportation to and from the course each day
How much training will I need to do?
The amount of training you’ll need depends on your current swimming abilities and may vary from person to person. As part of your course, you’ll be required to complete a timed swim and other related tasks. After completing your swim survey, you’ll receive feedback on your results, highlighting areas that may need improvement.
We strongly recommend completing your swim test as early as possible. This will help us assess the level of training you’ll require and give you more time to practice and enhance your skills before the course begins.
I'm not able to practise in a pool.
You should try early morning jogging and short-burst sprinting. If you have space around your home or garden you should also set up some bodyweight circuit training.
The most ideal training for a lifeguard certification would be to get in the water, but these exercises can help with your endurance as well as your lung capacity - both of which are essential for your lifeguard training.
Will I have to take the course again if I come back next year?
All certifications are valid for 2 years. You will not need to take another course the following year. However, after 2 years, you will have to take a re-certification course which is typically 4-5 hours per certifications.
Where do I stay during the course?
It is your responsibility to book yourself into accommodations for the duration of your course unless your camp director has specified otherwise.
Our hostel guide will be available in your 'Travel & Flight' and 'Perks' section in your profile.
What if my flight is delayed?
We advise to arrive into Canada at least one day before your course begins, we will provide you information on specific arrival dates when your application is in the Get Prepared stage.
In the unlikely event that your flight is delayed or cancelled and you will not make it in time for your course, please inform Camp Canada as soon as possible. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and we will do our best to ensure you attend the full course and obtain your full qualification.
What if I fail my qualification course?
Your placement at camp may be at risk if you do not pass the course. As you cannot perform the duties of your role, your camp may choose not to continue with your employment. It is crucial you practise as much as possible.
We want to reassure you that our team will try our hardest to get you to a point where you'll be able to pass. We will read over the answers that you provided in your survey, and if we feel you are at risk of failing the course we will put measures in place to help you pass!
As many of these courses provide several certifications, it is possible to receive a different level of lifeguarding certification or you could receive a first aid certification without completing the lifeguarding certification. (e.g., If you are registered for National Lifeguard but unable to complete it, you may still receive your Bronze Medallion and Cross with Standard First Aid and CPR C)
