Extending Your Stay in Canada as a Worker: Overview

3 min. readlast update: 07.09.2024

*PLEASE NOTE - If you would like to extend your stay in Canada to continue working at your camp, your camp must get in touch with our team first in order to begin your online work permit extension application process. Please do not begin your online work permit extension application with IRCC until you have received your instructions from Camp Canada.

Overview

The “Expiry Date” on your work permit is the date you must stop working in Canada. You can locate this date on your work permit, as shown in the image below:

If you would like to continue working at your camp after this date, you must apply for a work permit extension before your work permit expires. If you successfully submit your online application to IRCC before your expiry date, then you are legally allowed to stay in Canada and continue to work under the same conditions as your original work permit while the IRCC processes your application. This is called, “maintained status.”

If you do not submit your application in time, you will no longer be able to submit your application online, nor remain in Canada to work. Instead, you will need to travel to a US land border in order to apply for a new work permit, if possible. Please see here for more information on this.

The Process

In order to begin your online work permit extension application process, your camp must get in touch with our team first. We will then provide you with your steps required to complete on the Camp Canada portal and will prepare the necessary paperwork and instructions that you will need to complete and submit your online work permit extension application to IRCC.

Please be advised that once we provide you with your paperwork and instructions, you must complete and submit your application on the Government of Canada’s website independently. The website can be very glitchy, sometimes causing difficulties logging in for hours or even days. Therefore, we recommend that you set aside at least 3 hours to complete your application many days in advance of your work permit expiring. This will reduce your risk of missing the deadline to submit your application.

It is also important to complete your application:

  • On a computer

  • In an area where there is good WiFi and internet access

  • During your time off with minimal distractions

Be prepared to complete your application with:

  • Your passport

  • A credit card (*only if the application processing fee is applicable)

Camp Canada cannot complete and/or submit your application on your behalf, nor has access to your IRCC account.

Fee

There may be a fee for the online work permit extension application that you may be responsible for paying (*please note: if you are fee-exempt, you should not see these fees on your IRCC account):

  • Application processing fee - $155 CAD

See here for more information on application fees and proof of fee-exemption.

Processing Time

The processing time of an online work permit extension application with IRCC can take several weeks to months. It is possible that you may not receive a decision on your application until after you have already completed your employment with camp and have returned home.

However, if you apply to extend your work permit before it expires, you are legally allowed to stay in Canada and continue to work under the same conditions as your original work permit while the IRCC processes your application. This is called, “maintained status.”
